Pac-Man, stylized in uppercase as PAC-MAN, is an iconic arcade game created by Toru Iwatani of Namco. It was first released in Japan under the name PUCKMAN in May 1980. The game was later licensed for distribution in the United States by Midway Games, debuting in October 1980. At that time, the arcade scene was dominated by "stark" space shooters like Galaxian and Asteroids. PAC-MAN is credited with establishing the key conventions of the maze chase genre and has become a lasting classic in video game history, as well as a cultural icon of the 1980s. Interestingly, there may have been gender differences in gaming preferences during that era. A 1982 estimate suggested that approximately 60% of PAC-MAN players were women, whereas around 90% of players of the space shooter Omega Race were men.
